Clicker training for success.

The use of a clicker or other marker when training your dog is something that is vital if training is to be successful

The clicker is a small hand held device which, when pressed makes a clicking sound for a split second.

The basic idea behind the use of a clicker is to mark the second the dog exhibits the desired behaviour, eg sit. It is vitally important to communicate to the dog that what he is doing is correct, at the split second they perform the desired action.

If we wait a few seconds the dog may have changed position and will associate the reward with an incorrect action. It takes time for your hand to reach the treat bag, pick one out and hand it to the dog. Probably 4-5 seconds.. That’s too long. So we mark the desired behaviour with the clicker or marker then we have time to deliver the treat.

The dog will then associate the clicking sound with having performed correctly. Training without using a clicker or marker to indicate correct behaviour, in this case the clicker, will fail.

You can substitute another sound for the clicker as a marker however you must be able to conistently repeat the same sound. The clicker is a great way to do  so and is a vital tool in successful delivery of confirmation to the dog that they have done what was asked of them.

Here is a list of our recent blog posts - please take a look. The information will help you solve some of your queries.

Obedience training.

Basic obedience to helping your puppy navigate their way in the world. A puppy or young benefits greatly from being trained in the basic obedience actions.

Sit when prompted. Square in front of the handler, while making eye contact.  Down on all fours, maintaining eye contact. Come when called, a vital command which should be obeyed.

The return to handler is a very important  command and may be a life saver in certain conditions.

The NO command to indcate that what the dog is doing is not correct.

These and other commands are important to learn and integrate into the young dog or puppies life as early as possible.
